Caravan Control and Monitoring via LTE using the Controller Area Network bus (CAN)
Today, customers of motorhomes and caravans are accustomed to smart systems in cars and homes interacting with their connected devices, providing functionality for monitoring and remote control. The demand for and use of similar functionality is therefore highly desired also in a modern recreational vehicle.
The Controller Area Network (CAN) standard allows electronic control units’ (ECU’s) to communicate with each other. Heater, water tank, gas, lighting, and refrigeration are examples of components with ECUs in a modern caravan or motorhome.
This degree project involves controlling and monitoring a select few ECUs on a CAN-bus from an MCU using the standard’s message-based protocol. Connectivity is provided by an LTE modem module.
